Facts

Country/Region: Tirol/Achensee
Departure: Maurach
Difficulty: middle
Length: 8 km
Highest Point: 960 m
Height Difference: 400 m
Route-Details: Asphalt and gravel paths as well as a moderately steep forest road. From Eben to Wiesing 400 meters elevation difference, downhill – moderately difficult.

Landscape

The Inn Valley glacier created a gentle hill landscape near Wiesing. The Zillertal glacier left the special geological stone relics within the upper range of the cycle course, on which the cyclist can relax his weary legs. Several resting points allow for magnificent views of the Inn Valley.

Culture

An interesting place for contemplation is the pilgrimage church St. Notburga, dating back to the first half of the 18. Century. In a glass shrine on the baroque high altar the exquisitely dressed skeleton of the 1313 deceased Holy Notburga lies in state. Exhibits for the art and culture history of the holy admiration are to be seen next door in the Notburga Museum. The old Widum accommodates the first art-historical museum concerning Tirol’s only Patron Saint. With the highest church tower in the district Schwaz, the parish church Wiesing can be seen from afar. This is an ideal point for sightseeing along the bike trail. Remarkable above all are the statues of the martyrs Paulus and Johannes, who are believed to protect Tirol from weather damage.

Recreation and Wellbeing

Before the trek into the Inn Valley Cycle Path or the strain over the 400 elevation meters back to the Achensee one needs to recharge one’s batteries. You can choose from a variety of Tirol’s delicacies from Pressknödel (dumplings) to home made Schlutzkrapfen, baked mountain lamb up to “Grüner Hunte” – Spinatspätzle in Paprikarahm with melted Blauschimmel and mountain cheese.

Sights

Those who feel the descent to Wiesing to be too extreme can elect to board the Achenseebahn in Maurach. The train has been in operation for over 100 years and is the oldest steam driven rack train in Europe. It brings the guests comfortably, and slowly, but securely from Seespitz at the Achenssee to Eben and Jenbach. From that point, it is three kilometers to Wiesing, to the connection of the Via Bavarica Tyrolensis into the Inn Valley Cycle Path.

Facts

Country/Region: Tirol / Achensee
Departure: Achenkirch
Difficulty: easy
Length: 15 km
Highest Point: 950 m
Height Difference: 40 m
Route-Details: Gentle rises on otherwise flat roads exclusively for bikes, along the bank of the Achensee. Ideal for a leisurely bike trek.

Landscape

The Achensee was created after the last ice age as a Mesozoic formed transverse valley between the Karwendel- and the Rofangebirge. A flow of rocks of the side moraines of the Inn Valley glacier blocked the water flowing off in former times into the Inn valley. Today traversing the landscape is a delightful experience around the 6,8 km2 large and up to 133 (!) meters deep lake because of its variance in landscape: Lovely valleys in the west, the gentle giants of the Rofangebirge in the east make the Achensee with its Caribbean turquoise water the most beautiful lake in Tirol.

Recreation & health

The region Achensee has been long recognized as a wellness holiday resort. The title “Tirol’s Sport & Vital Park” at the Achensee denotes much more than just the Wellness Hotels, of which some belong to the best in Austria. An extensive trekking and running program gives credence to that title at the holiday lake. Offers such as Wellness Run Seminars and “Wandern mit Herz”, a heart conditioning program, are included.

Dining

The topic wellness is carried forth in the offerings of the many fine restaurants in the area. From light cuisine dishes to hearty meals, everything is prepared to meet the demands of the most discriminating diner, all using locally available products. The region is renown, beside its fish specialties, above all, for its excellent assortment of game: more than 500 years ago Kaiser Maximilian came here, in order to delight in the local game and fish, including Rehragout, Gamsbraten and Hirschragout. And since then, the kitchen has become even better.

Attractions on the route near the lake Achensee

A small detour can become a short-cut. Those who would rather cross the lake than travel along its banks can take a ship of the Achensee Boat Company from Achensee. If room is available on the ship, a bicycle can be transported at half price. A few kilometers away from Maurach or a 5 minutes foot march from the ship landing place in Pertisau lures a unique attraction: the Vitalberg. Deep under its glistening roof is a museum, dedicated to shale oil, which is extracted from the slate of the Karwendel and converted to wellness products.

Facts

Country/Region: Bavaria/Toelzer Land & Tirol/Achensee
Departure: Lenggries/Fall
Difficulty: middle
Length: 38,4 km
Highest Point: 907 m
Height Difference: 135 m
Route-Details: Approximately half is asphalt; the remaining portion is covered by a water-bound material.

Landscape

As wild as it is romantic: The approach to the levee crown of the fjord-like Sylvensteinsee with its own bike tunnel. Riding along the ravine, the landscape passes along the Walchen , which one crosses on a timber bridge in the midst of the wild and romantic landscape and protected areas of the Karwendel. In Tirol, the lush meadows and pictorial farms dominate, highlighted by mountain brooks and craggy cliffs.

Culture

An interesting tip in this region is “Fall”, made famous by the writer, Ludwig Ganghofer, in the novel „Der Jäger von Fall“. In a spectacular resettlement, the village Alt-Fall was established in 1959 in its new location. This was necessary because of the construction of the Sylvensteinspeicher, which provides protection from the inundations by the Isar. In Austria, the Sixenhof in Achenkirch, a centuries-old building with the local history museum of the Achensee is recommended (open May until October daily 1300 to 1800 ). A sightseeing jewel is the Kalvarienkirche with the “Heiligen Stiege” (holy steps), situated on a hill at the delta of the Blaserbach into the Ache, which can only be reached by crawling.

Recreation and health

In the nature reserve area of the Karwendel, as well as at the Sylvensteinsee, the rule applies: one of the many small swimming areas is surely available. The wellness hotels at the Achensee, Tirol’s Sport & Vital Park, are probably Austria’s finest with their excellent offers, among other things, wellness runner’s seminars.

Facts

Country/Region: Bavaria /Toelzer Land
Departure: Bad Toelz
Difficulty: Easy Length: 25 km
Highest Point: 850 m
Height Difference: 175 m
Route-Details: Half is covered by asphalt; the other half is covered by a water-bound material. The trail progresses along the Isar Bike Trail to Fall.

Landscape

A wonderful Auenlandschaft (country panorama) with numerous rare flowers and plants begins at Bad Toelz. Ride in a southerly direction, towards the mountain. With each pedal revolution a constant view of the unique Benediktenwand. It’s no wonder that natural established a monument: The nature monument hedge landscape in Gaissach, in the midst of the Hoch moors, which reveal traces of the last ice age.

Culture

Three areas offer here an almost infinite variety of activities. In Gaissach the famous Schnablerrennen (giant sleds) takes place at the carnival time, where courageous young men and young ladies slide on their home built carriages to the valley. And as a calmer farewell to summer on 29 September the Michaeliprozession takes place. In Wackersberg above all, the pictorial old farmhouses and the 1638 established chapel dating back to the time of the black death are well worth a visit. There is something going on throughout the year. In Lenggries, fests and traditional customs are maintained. Worth seeing among other things are the parish church St. Jakobs , the old Kalkofen, the animal museum and the old Kalvarienberg in this holiday area with its well kept, rural fashioned houses.

Recreation and Wellbeing

The health resort Lenggries with its adventure pool Isarwelle is known far beyond Bavaria’s borders and is synonymous for recovery on the gentle route. And an expansive nature open-air swimming pool, tennis places and all sorts of sport possibilities are the alternative for active people.

Dining

Culinary delights await the guests of the area with such specialties as raw milk cheese from the Toelzer Kasladen and the “Toelzer Prugel” (tasty, soft chocolate bars). Mountain cheese from the Alm, delicious meals in cozy huts and alms and juicy steaks from charcoal grills satisfy every appetite. And to quench your thirst, a fresh Reutberger monastery beer. In addition a wonderful Enzian or Obstbrand from the farmer and the reinvigorated traveler can continue.

The ride up to the the Brauneck, the house mountain of Munich is a renown and beloved adventure. From this point, one has a fascinating view of the capital of Bavaria. There is also the possibility for easy hiking. Less known, but as fascinating is a journey to the area west of the Wackersburg Fortress where 300-400 year old linden trees stand. Pssst, keep it to yourself: it’s a secret tip.

In Fischbach, we recommend a visit to the St. Johannes Church with its painted tower from the 17th Century, magnificent stucco works of the choir vault and a beautiful wood relief. And in Bad Toelz there is an infinite number of things to discover: The Franziskanerkloster, the local history museum, the puppet theatre or the Kurhaus with a rich culture program, the historical Toelzer market route or the Kalvarienberg with its Leonhardikapelle and the fantastic view over Bad Toelz as well as the entire Isarwinkel are only some suggestions. One should also take in the traditional, cultural high point of the year: The Leonhardifahrt with the splendorous decorated horse carts, which takes place annually on 6 November.

Recreation and health

In Bad Toelz one finds many wellness and health hotels, most in direct proximity to the Kurpark. The most outstanding of these attractions is surely the Kurhaus with Europe’s largest indoor walking tail.
Cozy beer gardens and idyllic pastries delight the cyclists. Those who love fresh fish have come to the right place. Trout char, and carp are often fresh from the local fisheries. Those who prefer a heartier meal can enjoy tasty grill specialties and delicious Bavarian. In addition, the light Mediterranean kitchen with pasta and fresh salads can be found on the edge of the trail, just as the native herbs, which move into the regional pots.

The mountain forest opens to a pictorial view of the summits of the Karwendel and Wettersteingebirge. Near Geretsried nature and landscape protection areas lure with bird refuge areas.

In addition to rafting facilities in Wolfratshausen one should visit the “Bergwaldtheater” : This summer open air stage with nearly 1,000 seats is romantically situated over the roofs of the village. The theater offers classical concerts and a venue for conventions. Village fests and fairs are well worth a visit, as are small art and traditional music presentations, the history path and the local history museum. And finally, Geretsried also offers among other things, the very interesting village Dorfschmiede (village blacksmith smith) Gelting.

Country/Region: Bavaria /Alpenregion Tegernsee Schliersee & Tirol/Achensee
Departure: Kreuth
Difficulty:medium
Length: 27 km
Highest Point: 950 m
Height Difference: 90 m
Route-Details: Mostly reinforced forest trails with moderate upward gradients. Short section on federal highways with steep climb/descent. Careful biking is advised.

On the Bavarian side of the mountain saddle the way leads to one of the most beautiful valley country sides of the Alpine northern edge, past lush meadows and pictorial farms by the gentle Weissachauen. The Tirol side, beyond the mountain saddle, is covered by pristine alpine nature.

Culture

In Kreuth numerous attractions are available to the selection: The Gothic parish church St Leonhard (oldest Leonhardskirche in Bavaria , the Holy Cross Kircherl, many clinics and nursing centers, the annual international Oleg Kagan music celebration (at the beginning of July) or the many costume festivals -, forest and customs celebrations like the Palmtragen, Johannifeuer or Almkirta. A cultural gem worth seeing is the Kalvarienkirche with the holy staircase, situated on a hill at the delta of the Blaserbach into the Ache, which can be ascended only on knees. In Achenkirch the Sixenhof is highly advised as an intermediate stop: The centuries-old Tiroler Einhof accommodates the local history museum of the Achensee (May until Octobers daily: 1300 to 1700, www.sixenhof.at)

While the climatic health resort in Kreuth, in which swimming in the Kreuther Gumpen as well as a bike tour between Wallenbergflanke Hirschberg Leonhardstein and finally to the Blaubergmassiv is highly advised, there are other attractions in Tirol.

Restaurants

One map, different bills of fare: On the German side we advise, naturally, home-made Alm products such as cheese, game or mushroom dishes and caramelized Kaiserschmarrn. The recommendation in Tirol, in contrast includes fresh Achensee trout, prepared according to your desire.

In Wildbad Kreuth, one should take a short recuperative rest at the former site for a health spa. And then, in contrast on Tirol side, it is a mere 10 km ride to Canada: The Rofandorf Steinberg offers unaffected nature, wild ravines and heavily wooded forests, perhaps the most beautiful end of the world.
